During shiva, a week-long mourning period for Jewish relatives who have passed away, a larger yahrzeit candle is burned for seven days. Not only is the candle used in memorial of family members and during Yom Kippur, but it is also lit on Jewish holidays, including Shemini Atzeret, the final day of Pesach and Shavuot. Yom HaShoah is a day of mourning and fasting among Jewish people to remember the six million Jewish people who died in the Holocaust. Thus, the candles are lit in a Jewish home on the eve of Yom Kippur, The Day of Atonement, or Yom HaShoah, the Holocaust Remembrance Day. The memorial candle is also used in remembrance of the Holocaust. Jewish people also believe that the soul of the dead will rejoice and derive joy from the light. The soul candle is lit to bring back the light and to memorialize their Jewish loved one. Jewish people believe that when a person dies, their soul departs, leaving a dark void in the world. For example, if your grandmother passes away, your entire household only needs to light one candle for her. If a family member passes away, only one needs to be lit for that family member in the household. You can also light one for others, however, such as boyfriends, girlfriends, or grandparents. Jewish people tend to light Yahrzeit candles for close family members like parents, husbands or wives, children, and siblings. The memorial candle is lit on the eve of the death anniversary and burns for up to 26 hours. It is typically burned inside a Jewish person’s home or near the grave of the deceased. The soul candle is an important item in Jewish culture and has been for over 2000 years when the memorial candle was first used in the Mishnaic period.Īs the Yahrzeit candle is a memorial candle, it is used on the anniversary of the death of a loved one every year based on the Hebrew calendar. What are Yahrzeit Candles Used For?Ī Yahrzeit or Yahrtzeit candle is also sometimes called a memorial candle, but the Hebrew word it comes from “נר נשמה”, means soul candle and the Yiddish word it comes from “יאָרצײַט ליכט” means anniversary candle. This will enable the project to continue to grow and develop for many years to come and gives us the confidence that the Community is supporting it.A Yahrzeit, sometimes spelled as yahrtzeit candle, is an important item in the religion of Judaism. Maccabi GB will be charging £2 for each Yellow Candle once again, plus £3 postage and packaging rather than relying purely on donations. We are encouraging the community to keep their empty Yellow Candle Tin, plant a seed for the future, to help us all remember the past. The 2023 project will see the continuation of ‘Remembrance to Renewal,’ where each Yellow Candle will come with Dwarf Sunflower Seeds. Participants are invited to share images of their lit candles on social media on the eve of Yom HaShoah, thereby creating a modern-day collective communal memorial. The project aims to distribute yellow remembrance candles to as many individuals in the community as possible alongside each Yellow Candle, a card with the name, age, date, and place of death of someone who perished in the Holocaust is enclosed. The Yellow Candle Project, managed by Maccabi GB, is a practical and informal educational tool to remember Jewish Holocaust victims on Yom HaShoah, and broaden participants’ understanding of the Holocaust, in the safe space of their homes.
